That sucked...

So I went out to my truck after school to leave and guess what, it was dead. Remember the thread I put about wiring my lights behind the grille into an acc. wire? Well I'm gonna be doing that soon cause I left the stupid things on all day. Had my friend take me home and get some jumper cables, went back and jumped it. Got it started but it wouldn't stay running without keeping it revved up. So I drove home with my foot on the gas the whole time. Got it in the garage on the charger now, hoping it'll charge up and isn't shot. I'll let you all know later when it gets done charging

I hate days like that... Hope your battery comes back to life! Get those lights rewired!

That is one of the added benefits of the newer trucks that kill most powered accessories after a certain time limit expires.

OklaHemi 08-24-2011 05:59 PM

rewire your shit man or get a lighted switch and mount it where you can see it

I'm going to rewire it for sure. I already found that blue wire under the steering wheel, just have to do it. So I guess I need to wire the power wire coming from the battery to the accessory wire right?

Never time to do it right until it's time to do it over...which usually costs you 3x as much in time/money.
We've all done it once though...

This is my one time exception lol

ramthis9501 08-24-2011 07:59 PM

Well I've had it on the charger for almost 3 hours now and it still hasn't moved on the charger. Still at 4 amps, and I checked it with a volt meter, it's pumping 27 volts in to the battery

BMRbrnSNRbrd 08-24-2011 08:54 PM

Mine was when I did the e-fan on my '04...could have easily (and almost did) cost me a new fuse block.

ramthis9501 08-24-2011 09:28 PM

Well it's still not down any on the charge... man I hope it didn't fry the battery

ramthis9501 08-24-2011 10:25 PM

Ok just curious... but how much would a good battery run me? I don't really want to get a cheap walmart brand because it'll probably just go out in a year or two. What do you all recommend?

ramthis9501 08-24-2011 10:45 PM

I just went outside to test it out and it started up! Let it idle for a minute and it did fine! I'm so relieved!!

OklaHemi 08-25-2011 12:41 AM

Batteries are like everything else wide price range with quality going up with dollars. You don't have a huge stereo set up nor do you run a butt pad of accessories just get one with a 5~7 year warranty from orielys, you should be fine

myoung84 08-25-2011 09:38 AM

If it starts acting up just take it to an auto parts store and they can test the battery and see if it's actually bad. A Walmart battery will be fine, just make sure it has a good warranty. I have run Walmart batteries and they are good. I think they sell Everlast? If you buy a 5 year battery and it goes out in 4.5 years, just take it back and they will replace it for free.

ramthis9501 08-25-2011 09:52 AM

I'll have to remember that for the future, right now it's acting fine so lets hope it stays that way

Okiespaniels 08-26-2011 10:09 PM

FYI: There two main battery makers, Johnson Control and Exide. Exide used to make Walmart batteries...Johnson control makes Autozones and Sears. Not sure of the rest but if the person can't tell you who did, the label should. Most Johnson batteries are now made in Mexico.
I have Walmart batteries in both my trucks and they work perfectly.
Your warranty will have a "free replacement" period and a prorated warranty which starts when the free replacement period ends. Once a battery gets into the prorate you will pay something based on use to replace the battery. The longer the free replacement period the costlier the battery....and the larger the power rating.

ramthis9501 08-26-2011 10:19 PM

The one I have now is an Interstate battery and it is big. Oversized matter of fact, but that's good if I ever add more electronic stuff to the truck

ramthis9501 08-26-2011 10:20 PM

And thanks for the info

916Timmy 08-26-2011 10:51 PM

I like Optima gel batteries...they are expensive, but can take a beating!!! And they work great for extra juice stuff like heavy stereos and a lot of lights....plus the vibrations won't hurt it.
