Dumped or duals

I have a true dual flowmaster 40 series running out of the back, ive gotten alot of compliments on it, but i want to know if i should 1)dump it after the axle or 2)dump it and cut the cats. i want to get a little bit more of an intimidating sound, like a growl, but idk if the cats getting cut off will do the trick

0212353 05-15-2012 09:47 PM

dump it after the axle. don't gut the cats

Ramthedaughter 05-15-2012 09:54 PM

ive heard that taking the cats off though increases horsepower?

0212353 05-15-2012 10:09 PM

it can, but the hemi likes a little bit of backpressure.

(S.M.R) 101 05-15-2012 10:24 PM

After the axle.. I had an AT3030XL dumped after the rear axle and it sounded amazing

Lt.Dan 05-15-2012 10:33 PM

Duals. I've personally never liked the way anything dumped sounds.

Agreed. Duals back, x pipe before mufflers to even out air flow, duals out. With 12 inch or 15 inch echo tips. Do that with two super 44 flow master mufflers. The outcome is a deep, menacing sound

Randall488 05-16-2012 01:05 AM

I'm running dual 3 inch into cherry bomb xtreme single in single out, mine dump before the axel, I move alot more air than a hemi but its got a real nice rumble down low, and screams up high. No cats either.

if you dump it and not use echo tips you get a deeper sound only drawback to dumping it is more reverb in the cab i personally don't like how tailpipe exhuasts have more of a echo'y sound

fastnnuffrt 05-16-2012 08:49 AM

Well if your wanting horsepower lose the flow master for starters and get a straight thru muffler like a magma flow.. I personally don't like tips out the back besides on lofted trucks with like 6 inch diesel tip. But each to his own. I'm putting a roll pan on in future to elimanate my tips

ramthis9501 05-16-2012 10:23 AM

I used to have duals running out the back, but I cut them back after I put on the roll pan. They're now dumped over the axle and sound pretty good, it screams in the higher rpms. But I still want it louder lol

Graygoose 05-16-2012 10:39 AM

if you have true duals already, keep the cats and dump by axle...IF you want more deep sound.

Ramthedaughter 05-16-2012 11:18 AM

i agree with you fastnnuffrt. im not sure what i was thinkin about going with flowmaster when i had it done. it was over 2 years ago, magna flow has always sounded good also

LowRam 05-16-2012 12:21 PM

dump right before the rear axle and you will have a loud ass truck lmao, you should here mine, my brother lives about three blocks up the roar from me and he can be in his house and hear my truck when i start it up lol

you know my neighbors have to love when i come in late. if i start it and go in the house theres things in my house that kind ove viberate from the rumble of it idleing lol

swirvin21 05-16-2012 12:52 PM

I have mine dumped out below the back edge of the cab right behind the muffler for better ground clearance (tore off my duals in Disney on some rocks) and the drone inside the cab gets REALLY REALLY annoying over a long drive. I suggest you try and dump it out as far back as possible!

Okiespaniels 05-16-2012 07:17 PM

I've out grown the drone as well. Besides, why own a kickass stereo and have the drone frequency cancel out your sub woofers?
What really stopped me from doing it was losing a good friend from carbon monoxide poisioning. He thought his dumps sounded great....but he was dead wrong. :(

BMRbrnSNRbrd 05-16-2012 10:02 PM

I would definitely lose the Flowmaster IF you can and keep the cats. I made the mistake of removing them on my '04 and it killed my 0-60.

Ramthedaughter 05-16-2012 10:11 PM

so take out the muffler in all and run straight with cats

fast_Orange 05-16-2012 10:42 PM

im wantin to change my exhaust also. mins is dumped at the rear axle.
im thinking of dual HD 50 series flows?

fastnnuffrt 05-17-2012 09:34 AM

Say no to flow

Graygoose 05-17-2012 09:39 AM

I cant believe everyione dislikes Flowmaster, to me, there's a reason they are the most popular aftermarket mufflers there are...if you want rust proof, they have stainless.
I just ordered the catback Flowmaster kit for mine, should be here in a week.
I don't belive in the 'flow' other muffler manufactures put out, sometimes backpressure is good, and needed. Almost all the drag racers I know use Bullets, Flowmasters or Borla XR-1

swirvin21 05-17-2012 09:54 AM

I think it varies by engine. Flowmaster is the best sounding on my V10 IMO, but I love the Magnaflow on my V8 360.

We should open a section with video/audio of exhausts. I would post both of mine. Nothing like being able to hear your exact motor with different mufflers/setups.

Ramthedaughter 05-17-2012 11:17 AM

Ill see if i can post a video tonight of my exhaust and yall hear what im working with

LowRam 05-17-2012 01:27 PM

ill shoot a video or my rams exhaust, might have to put a warning lable on the loudness lol

It seems to be a ram thing on the few ram forums I'm on they all hate flow master and the forum boner seems to be magnaflow... I like both I just prefer the flow master sound and on a 3 ton truck a couple hp either way cannot be felt

Graygoose 05-17-2012 05:16 PM

If anyone can feel any seat of the pants on a 6000 lb truck 1-5hp, they're more man than me. Now if it's sound difference, that's a totally different thing. Personal preference. :D

Randall488 05-17-2012 06:04 PM

I'm all about lettin a engine breath straight through. Best sound and its the cheapest. But I were goin for perfornance cherry bomb, all the way or chambered or straight through.

Matt 05-17-2012 06:15 PM

straight pipes on a gas truck sound terrible imo lol

fastnnuffrt 05-17-2012 09:47 PM

I love the way flow master sounds on most. But when your trying get every bit of power 5-10 hp is more than you had. I live on the track and I don't know of any guys running chambered. But each to his own

Lt.Dan 05-17-2012 11:38 PM

Welp speakin of dumped exhaust, I guess mine is broke completely in half underneath the passenger floor board. But it's weird cuz no soot comes out right there and it didn't seem to sound any different.

DoubleTakeDodge 05-18-2012 01:57 AM

^^^ I am witness to this. Never seen it happen like this before?

Randall488 05-18-2012 02:46 AM

Ill say that the 8.0 sounds shitty straight piped, but my old 89 has a 318, that thing sounds like a total hard ass.
