Sub and amp suggestions

Currently I'm running two 12s in a shitty Ebay box with an old amp. I was given everything but the box by a good friend so I couldn't pass up the deal. I think I want to start working on the sound now and have a couple of questions.

The amp I have is HUGE. I'm not sure on power output, but physically it is very large. Can anyone suggest an amp that could run a single 12 but is relatively small in physical size? I know the first question will be: what sub? I don't know, I'm open to suggestions on that as well. The only thing I have nailed down is that the sub will be in a Fox Acoustics box under the passenger side rear seat.

My Alpine amp is pretty small and puts out 500W.

Kennwood amps are pretty small, and have good power. Small enough where I have a kennwood and another amp in my truck comfortably.
Sub wise, I personally love the sound of my l5 in my truck. You can get a box to fix that for your truck easily. Also,Look up kicker cvr and see if you like it. Cvr's are good subs with small amountsof power needed. My buddy has that in his QC and it sounds great! Just some suggestions

i'm running a 1000.5 with a CVX. LOVE it, but if I wasn't powering my doors I'd go with a 400.1 / CVR. Thats what I had in my last truck, worked pretty nice too

So you are powering everything with the 1000?

I'm running the Alpine PDX-M6 with the Type-R 12" sub in the Fox box and it is perfect for my needs.

The sub is 600RMS max and the amp is 600 watt RMS so it was a perfect fit. I would love to get rid of the factory Head Unit and replace with aftermarket... Like the $1,500 one we talked about Dave :D So that I can tweak the sound way more than with the stock settings.

I still need to rip out all the door speakers, tweats and roof speakers and replace with better speakers but....... I have a $2,700 product that i'm saving up for :D

yeah, I'm powering my front component set, rear 6x9s and sub from the 1000.5

I had a Soundstream digital amp and a JL 12" in my Integra.....amp was a beast and maybe 10 X 8 X 2
Get a DVC sub and run a mono amp at 2 ohms :)

I've got a l5 on a 1600x2 I run about 1300 watts on it and it slams. Cvx are damn good subs too! Look into that or cvr. Best sub for the buck

all comes down to money and how much you want to spend and what exactly you are looking for ... i could throw out numerous different setups but it's all dependent on cost and what kind of sound you are looking for..

I'm not one to have bass pounding until the neighbors hear it. I've always been an SQ person. The two 12s I have now are better than nothing but don't sound great. I'm sure its any one of the cheap components being used.

Is it possible to get good clean bass from a LOC or do I need to get an aftermarket HU first?

Matt 01-07-2013 04:55 PM

If you are wanting sq I would do 1 10" I either a custom ported box or a fox box I don't like 12s under our seats just chokes them down I have done them in many configurations and never satisfied and a good amp you can find a pretty small footprint amp to handle that... And yes a good loc will be ok for just sub

BMRbrnSNRbrd 01-07-2013 05:27 PM

Thanks Matt. Sounds like I need to research a 10.

I keep thinking of going back to ported.......but I do not want a foxbox. I hated the seats being raised in the truck, drove me nuts. I don't mind if I lose a bit of my underseat storage (I don't use it) and wouldn't mind getting a box that used the airspace from the driver's side too, port it out the back I guess. Have an amp wrack built into there somewhere..........

ya know, ideas.

What box do you use JJ?

if you're going to do something like that porting it out the side or front towards the front seats would work better .. porting it into a semi sealed area like behind the seat would actually load the port differently and the only problem with doing a box that way is your airspace is mostly in the two pockets so the box doesn't "flow" very well

One that I built. ;)

I've always liked a single 10 in a sealed box.

Matt 01-07-2013 09:32 PM

Maybe lol

Graygoose 01-14-2013 01:25 PM

why not powered 10" sub, all in one?

BMRbrnSNRbrd 01-14-2013 03:16 PM

Every powered sub I've heard didn't sound good at all.

Ramthedaughter 02-06-2013 11:45 AM

Last weekend i bought a fosgate T1 that rms at 800. I ordered a HiFonics amp last night for it cause my 1600 watt amp wasnt putting out enough power. But this 10" sub sounds amazing. Easily like a 12-15. look into Fosgatre subs theyre good for the price

Matt 02-06-2013 02:49 PM

pretty sure a t1 will not fit in his application

Lhemi 03-20-2014 03:28 AM

Lots of great info here, I've been looking at up grading my R/T system.

BMRbrnSNRbrd 03-20-2014 08:12 AM

I just finished installing Alpine Type S 6x9s in all four doors and some cheap $30 Kickers (because Alpine doesn't make a 3.5") in the dash. They are only powered off of the stock head for now but the difference is insane.

Matt 03-20-2014 09:21 PM

Ya I bet Dave

Did you do your own install? Could you recommend a system for upgrade for my R/T?
Thanks for any information!

BMRbrnSNRbrd 04-11-2014 11:20 AM

I did my own install. Do you have the Alpine system?
